IMPACT DATA
The Pouf shell diverts 397 lbs of CO2 from the atmosphere!
This is the equivalent of planting 8 trees, driving 360 miles in a passenger car, or enough energy to charge your smart phone every night for 59 years!
STUFF YOURSELF TO DIVERT EVEN MORE WASTE...
Every component in this pouf has been diverted from the landfill, and we want you to stuff it yourself with the things that you want to keep out of the landfill too. Maybe it’s those annual marathon t-shirts you’ve collected over the years (15 pieces of evidence showing how amazing you are), vacation uniforms from the last family trip (matching Disney outfits, anyone?), baby clothes you want to hold onto (for the next one in a few months/years), or even the ratty blanket that’s been with you forever (it might not match your bedding but you’re still very attached).
Extending the life of clothing and textiles by an extra 9 months of active use would reduce carbon, waste, and water footprints by around 20-30% each of an item. For every pair of jeans you keep in your pouf instead of a landfill, you avoid 80% of its carbon footprint and 700 grams of waste.
DID YOU KNOW...
Only 10% of clothing donated to thrift stores is actually sold. The rest is shipped to developing countries like Africa, harming their local industries. The US alone ships a BILLION pounds of used clothing per year to other countries. Let’s forget the donation bag – fill your pouf with sentimental discardables and take pride in knowing you’re keeping your things close to home, and memories closer. The Earth will thank you for it!
For every ton of cotton-t shirts reused and kept out of landfill, 13.2 tons of CO2 are saved, compared to less than 1 ton saved by recycling the same quantity. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, UPCYCLING IS BETTER THAN RECYCLING!
STORY OF THE MATERIALS
AIRBAG FABRIC
Designed to save lives, this high tech material is sourced from factory end rolls trashed during airbag production. Diverting a single square foot of airbag fabric saves 26.5 lbs CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Airbag fabric is silicon coated nylon, which makes it incredibly durable for outdoor use, and easy cleaning.
STREET POLE BANNER VINYL
These advertising banners are made from polyester and polyvinyl that is typically thrown in a landfill after a single use. Each 3 pound street pole banner diverts 45 tablespoons of plastic getting into the soil and water. Saving and upcycling these materials directly impacts our health. The vinyl is virtually indestructible, super easy to clean, and makes the perfect durable bottom for the outdoor furniture pieces.
AUTOMOTIVE NYLON
This high density nylon fabric is used for the interior pillows when we stuff them for you. This fabric is automotive factory discard, originally used for out-of-sight linings. It’s tough, lightweight and machine washable.
THREAD
We upcycle thread from a large factory that discards ¼ spools at shift changes to keep work flow at maximum efficiency.
STUFFING
Pre-stuffed poufs will be filled with foam scraps from the mattress industry. This material is synthetic, non-biodegradable, and not recyclable. Because it’s shredded and lightweight, it’s particularly harmful if it ends up in oceans and waterways. It’s great as upcycled stuffing for our furniture because it's soft, lightweight and puffs up for comfort and support.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
We have been playing with the idea of home goods for years because our upcycled materials are durable, waterproof, and stain resistant – all qualities that make wonderful furniture and upholstery, especially for outdoor use. When the global pandemic hit, our business changed. We felt uncomfortable selling bags to people in quarantine, and reflected on our mission of diverting trash from landfill, and vision in changing the way people see trash. The Rewilder furniture line was created with our mission in mind, starting with the "Stuff Yourself" pouf, and eventually growing to include a soft chair and ottoman, all made from favorite upcycled materials. We hope you love it as much as we do :)
